Carol Brown

Carol Brown has been a fundamental part of the middle school science department at Notre Dame Academy for many years. Utilizing a fully equipped, state of the art laboratory setting to explore science with the junior high girls, her hands-on, inquiry-based style sparks an interest in science among her students. As a Notre Dame alumna, she understands firsthand the value of an all-girl environment in creating students who are comfortable with and confident in science.

Mrs. Brown’s passion for science is obvious to her students and is expressed in her free time activities. As an Earthwatch volunteer, she has participated in scientific research in Kenya studying endangered rhinos and their habitats, and in the rain forests of Puerto Rico, studying and analyzing endangered amphibians, reptiles, and plants. She has studied volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest and visited the Galapagos to view many of the rare and fascinating species observed by Charles Darwin. In addition to her Bachelors and Masters degrees in education, Mrs. Brown also pursues interesting and unique professional development opportunities. She has attended a four day NASA training program designed to focus on engineering, which was held at the Goddard Space Center and on the Intrepid in Manhattan. She has participated in a GLOBE training workshop in Pennsylvania which featured environmental science and soil studies. The benefits of these experiences are incorporated into her classroom curriculum and appreciated by the students.

Mrs. Brown loves nature and enjoys hiking. She runs a hiking club at Notre Dame for the junior high girls and their families. Notre Dame’s family atmosphere and pursuit of excellence have always been important to her. Having spent her elementary and high school years as an NDA student, and having taught at NDA for over 30 years, Mrs. Brown has spent most of her life associated with Notre Dame and is truly an enduring part of the NDA family and one of its most respected and valuable assets.
