Amanda Chartier

Amanda Chartier is the first-grade teacher at Notre Dame Academy. As an alumna of Notre Dame Academy High School, she is ecstatic to be reunited with the Notre Dame family, this time as an educator. As a former student, she cherishes fond memories of Notre Dame Academy, walking from class to class down Marguerite’s Way in the springtime, working with caring faculty members, and creating lifelong friendships. She was inspired by the love of learning that was nurtured at Notre Dame, and she went on to earn a Bachelors in Elementary Education and Natural Science from Wagner College, and a Masters in Early Childhood and Special Education.

 

Prior to returning to Notre Dame, she shared her passion for teaching young minds she was a substitute teacher in the public school system, a teacher’s assistant at Wagner College’s early childhood center, a summer camp counselor for five and six-year-old children, and a docent at the Staten Island Zoo. She is also a dance instructor at Exposure Dance Studio in Staten Island where she teaches ballet, jazz, and tap for students ages preschool to middle school.

Ms. Chartier loves teaching the first grade and is rewarded by the progress of every child. The first grade is an important year filled with excitement and exploration. First graders learn to become independent readers, descriptive writers, skilled mathematicians, good citizens, and inquisitive scientists. Her goal is to hone each girl’s excitement and keep their natural curiosity alive by creating fun and educational approaches to challenging topics. Some favorite class activities include students narrating and animating stories they created on iPads, going on an egg hunt in the springtime to discover eggs with QR codes which prepares them to listen to poems during poetry month, and using a variety of manipulatives such as dominoes, dice, and cards to practice and apply math concepts.
